Electric Vehicle Policy Stocktaking in Thailand
Invitation to the Stakeholder Workshop on Electric Vehicle Policy Stocktaking by Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC) and Agora Verkehrswende

Thailand stands at a critical juncture in its electric vehicle transition. While the country has made significant progress in EV adoption and has adopted very far-reaching policy-instruments to incentivise the purchase of electric vehicles, the policy targets of achieving at least 30% of Zero-Emission-Vehicles of the county’s total vehicle production by 2030 and 50% of vehicle registrations to be electric in 2030 are also very ambitious. While ZEV sales have increased significantly in recent years, adoption rates are not yet fast enough to reach the respective targets, particularly in the field of motorcycles and busses and trucks.
The transition from internal combustion engines to electric mobility is essential when it comes to achieving the goals to decarbonise transport as the CO2-savings are significant. The ramp-up of electromobility in Thailand offers good prospects for drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as harmful air pollutants. As Thailand is rapidly expanding its market for electric vehicles, moving to mass market adoption is the next challenge. At this workshop we would like to identify which policy instruments are most interesting with a view to reaching the targets. Drawing from international experience in other countries, we would like to discuss with participants which instruments could be recommended for further consideration by stakeholders in Thailand.
Agora Verkehrswende in cooperation with the Thai-German Cooperation on Energy, Mobility and Climate (TGC EMC), funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under Germany’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), are organizing this workshop. The findings of the workshop will be incorporated into a report prepared by Agora Verkehrswende (EV Stocktaking Report).
Agenda-Highlights: Panel discussion: Norwegian & Thai experiences
- Keynote: How Norway became the world’s leading market for electric vehicles by Ms. Christina Bu, Secretary General, Norwegian EV Association
- Panel discussion: Norwegian and Thai experiences Ms. Christina Bu & Dr. Yossapong Laoonual, Department of Mechanical Engineering, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT)
